Spider Photos - Fishing Spiders

Pisaurina sp.
Family Pisauridae
- Nursery Web and Fishing Spiders.

These spiders resemble the wolf spiders (Lycosidae), but have a different eye pattern.
Pisaurids have their eyes arranged in 2 rows, the posterior row slightly recurved, the median eyes in the second row slightly (if any) larger than the others. (Wolf spiders have eyes arranged in 3 rows). The egg sac is carried by the female under her prosoma, held there by her chelicerae pedipalps. Before the eggs hatch, the female attaches the sac to a plant and then builds a web around it -- and stands guard nearby. The Pisaurids forage for their food and build webs only for protecting their young. Some spiders in this family, particularly fishing spiders in the genus Dolomedes, are quite large and may have a leg spread of 75 mm or more. The Dolomedes spiders live near water; they walk on the surface of water and dive underneath it to feed on aquatic insects and even small fish.
Many people (including me), are confused by the  5 similar looking spiders - the harmless Huntsman, Wolf Spider,  Southern House Spider (Kukulcania), Fishing Spider and  Brown Recluse which of course is not harmless.  All photos are copyright to their owners and may not be reproduced without permission. FISHING SPIDERS (Dolomedes triton)

The Six-Spotted Fishing Spider (Dolomedes triton), is slightly smaller than D. tenebrosus, but it is nevertheless a very large spider.  It is often seen hunting on the water's surface in ponds and slow-moving streams.

Hi Glen, I found this big, beautiful spider today in Decatur, GA (Atlanta) sitting on a granite rock pile just feet from a small, flowing creek. When I touched it, it vanished underneath one of the rocks. Because of its size and proximity to the water, I looked at your fishing spider pics, but this spider just doesn't have the contrasty pattern that those pics have. Notice the yellow spots on the abdomen...the black velvety markings on the thorax...sorry i don't have better view of the eyes. The body and legs just aren't as stripey as your other fishing spider photos. Here are pics below, and thanks so much! Love your site! Rebecca

Hey Glen, I ran across the rather large spider here on our farm in southern Virginia yesterday. Said insect was in a cool spot by a small creek. (Apparently, I disturbed him/her as I was bush hogging the area. I cannot seem to locate any info on this one. We have Recluses, Widows, Garden, Orbs, Jumpers and so on here. Wolves too, but this one didn't fit the bill. What do you think? Thank you in advance for any help. Sincerely, Dennis

my name is jim. i live in galloway n.j. that's about five miles west of atlantic city on the edge of the pine barrens. i was cleaning around my shed last week and found this spider(see attachments) on my shed. i've lived here for five years and on the east coast for about 25 years and have never seen a spider like this one. it's skin seemed like velvet and is about 2 1/2" in diameter including the legs. it's body was black and it had two rows of white dots with three dots in row on the top of it's abdomen. the legs had a kind of tiger stripe on them. i shooed into a wood pile and haven't seen it since. could you identify this spider for me? thanks. jim

Hi Glen, Found this guy in the NJ pine barrens where I live. Is this a fishing spider? It was bigger than the palm of my hand when it stretched all out. He was on the edge of a "boardwalk" over some swampy area on a trail I like to walk. Let me know if you get a chance. Thank you, Jennifer

We took these photos of this 3" diameter spider along a small creek in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Any idea what it may be. It looks like a Fishing spider but the markings are different. It was a big one! Chris DeFranco Knoxville, TN

Hey I just came across your site when I was trying to identify this spider I found outside my front door. I think it's a wolf spider but I haven't been able to find a pic that exactly matches it. Or is it a fishing spider? I attached a couple of pics of the one I found. Notice the 6 white spots on it's back. Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks, Mike

Hi, Hi, I live in northern Virginia. Can you tell me what kind of spider this is? It has 3 pair of eyes, wasn't sure if it was a brown recluse or not b/c i didn't think they were native. Thanks!

Hi, I was near a brook the other day in maryland and found this big guy  next to my foot. Im pretty sure he's either a fishing spider (since it  was near a brook with ample waterstriders, which they feed on) or a  wolf spider due to his large tusk like things. Also, an interesting  note: I wanted to photograph him, so i found a long twig and nudged him  a bit so that he was more visible. He reacted by secreting a white  fluid from his bottom. This fluid can be seen in the second photograph  below his back two legs, near the edge of the leaf. Perhaps that might  help. Would you happen to know which one he is and what the genius and  species name for him would be? Im very interested. Thanks so much! ~Michelle

I found a spider in my garage that I cannot seem to find anything that looks like it on your site. (picture attached)< It looks somewhat similar to the grass spider, but this is all black with white stripes on each side and also has several white dots on its abdomen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Annetta. I actually just found out what it was a few hours ago. It is a six spotted fishing spider for sure. My hubby had been fishing down by the river and must have followed him home?? Thanks again for the help. You are welcome to keep up the photo with its identification.

Hi! I found your website and it's awesome. This guy was sitting on the pond in our back yard near shore.  After viewing your site, I think it's probably some kind of fishing spider. Can you ID?  Thanks so much!
