Green Lynx Spider (Peucetia viridans)
Lynx spiders get their name from the way that they sometimes pounce
on their prey in a catlike fashion. These spiders spend their time
hunting for insects in bushes and low plants. They are fast runners,
but can occasionally be seen lying in wait for prey beside flowers.
They build no web for prey capture, but they do release a silk
dragline as they hunt among leaves.
Look For: Bright green, cream, or tan body; legs are yellow with
black spines.
Length: 5/8".
Habitat: Fields, woods.
Range: Southern U.S.
Bite: While the Green Lynx spider aggressively attacks its insect
prey, it very seldom bites humans.

Photo taken on October 3, 2011.
We have quite a few of these on the property. They are great to have around during love bug season! They set up snares along the house and are very interesting!
Forgot to mention we are in Eustis, FL. I thought I had one of a ma and her billions of babies but I'm having trouble finding it. Jessica Click for a larger view. |

I live in Eastern Alabama and have used your site a number of times to identify spiders here. We have only lived here a year (military). I've been especially grateful to your site now that we have a child, so I can both protect him from harmful spiders while not killing harmless ones. I found this one inside my house recently and I have been unable to find any information online about what it might be. I saw another one a few days later. I assume they're spiders because they have 8 legs, but I've never seen anything like it. I'd love to hear what you think.
Regards,
Diana D

Hi,
I've combed your excellent website, spiderzrule!, and several other sources, but can't find a match for this spider I've found. Because of its barbed legs, I'm guessing some kind of lynx spider, but I don't know. Can you help?
Here are the details:
What: spider, 1 cm long, suspended from a porch post above a garden and lawn for long period of time (over an hour). Its green spots appear luminescent or sparkling to sight.
Where: Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Suburb of Philadelphia.
When: July 2011. Summer.
Thanks for your website -- It has helped me with other identifications!
Scott

Hello,
I was just on your website Spiderzrule.com looking up a spider I found in my backyard here in Gilbert, Arizona. It turns out it is a Green Lynx spider. It was eating a bee. Thanks to your site I was able to identify it so I though I would share a couple of the pictures I took of it and feel free to use them on your site if you like them.

I was following a deer and her fawn with my camera through a field last summer in Norris, TN. The weed and brush was up to 7ft.high in areas. I saw this beautiful spider just seconds before my face brushed into it's perch. It was the small egg sac dangling that caught my eye. I had to really look hard to see it. Since I took the picture I have looked for it to find out what kind it was. Thanks to this website I was able to identify my spider. The Green Lynx Spider. Thanks!

Hi Glen I'm also tossing in some shots of green lynx spiders, with dinner, and with offspring.
They live on my roses, and keep the aphids at bay.
I've been living peacefully in harmony with them for several years.
The pix people have sent you, of the spiders all curled up after people have sprayed them make me sad.
Too bad they couldn't have taken them outside.
Peace~ Trish;

Green Lynx was in my garage on a chair I was moving. Felt a web and looked to see it on the chair. Please use pics for your site, which, by the way, is the most fascinating site I've come across to help ID spiders!
