NURSERY WEB SPIDERS

r> r>
Nursery Web spiders - (Pisaurina sp. Family Pisauridae) - These spiders resemble the wolf spiders (Lycosidae), but have a different eye pattern. Pisaurids have their eyes arranged in 2 rows, the posterior row slightly recurved, the median eyes in the second row slighly (if any) larger than the others. (Wolf spiders have eyes arranged in 3 rows). The egg sac is carried by the female under her prosoma, held there by her chelicerae pedipalps. Before the eggs hatch, the female attaches the sac to a plant and then builds a web around it -- and stands guard nearby. The Pisaurids forage for their food and build webs only for protecting their young.  They are related to fishing spiders being members of the Dolomedes family and have been known to walk on water in search of prey.

maybe u can help me. circumference in the dundas valley conservation yesterday afternoon in hamilton, ontario and I came across a breaker box at an old camp ground. I opened the box and found the spider in the attached photo. it was probably around 30mm long. I've been all over the internet trying to identify this spider but I'm having a hard time. I think it looks like some sort of funnel spider, but there were no webs anywhere near by. the breaker box was about 66 inches off the ground and surrounded by packed down dirt and gravel w a circuference of around 100ft. I hope this info helps.

Hi Glen, I found this one on my patio furniture in PA. I tried researching to identify and the closest thing I could find using google was the Rabid Wolf Spider. The mother however does not have the striped characteristic; the hatchlings look like they do, but I know very little about spiders. Was I right in the assuming it is a Rabid or do you believe them to be a family of another kind? Thank you for your help and the photos are yours to use if you wish. Thank you, Diane

Also, I DID take a few pictures of the huge funnel weaver (I think that's what it is) that was living in the bedroom last year, so I'll attach those - one is a pretty good picture of the whole spider, and the other is just its abdomen as it slowly moved away. It's on my Chicago Manual of Style, which is a good two inches thick, to give you some basis for size comparison. It isn't the largest of them - that one moved before I could take the picture - but it's a pretty big one... Sorry for the size; I hadn't snipped them or worked on them at all. Katy

Hello, I recently purchased a house in Hingham, Massachusetts USA. I was greeted by this big fellow at the front door. A few people think it may be a brown recluse, however, the size is very large ( about 2.5"- 3" from toe to toe) and I am not sure if they can grown that large. It was dusk and the house has been vacant for a while. Any chance you can help me figure out what type of spider it is? Regards, Paul

I have been interested in spiders and other bugs for some time now. I did have an incounter quite some time ago with one. It made me scared of them for a while, but always wanted to know more. I am a professional photographer for weddings and senior portraits, but my days off in the summer consists of me walking through my garden and photographing bugs. I carry my camera with me outdoors all the time. I have sent you some pictures of spiders. Some I know what they are and some I'm still confused of. Sorry there is so many. I have had these for 2 years and wanted to do an educated site but found myself coming to your site to identify them. So I will just send them to you and let you have the fun. I did notice there was other sites you had and maybe you can use the other bug pictures I have taken. Cecropia larva and moth I know what they are but some of the other things are a lil weird. I will connect with you on facebook. If you can let me know what they are. Or do I just go to your site? I really do not know how it all works really. But here they are. Hope are all clear enough to be identified. The Assassins Bug was unreal. would like to bring attention to that bug. They are not poisonous but can transfer dieases to humans. At least certain ones can. There bite is pretty painfull. Woke my daughter up at 2am just screaming. But I can let you go now so sorry I'm long winded. Just really excited I found your site. Amazing!!!

Hi Glen, My husband and I just bought a house in Bristol CT and our outside bushes and ground covering are infested with these spiders. The spiders that are in our yard leave a blanket like web with a funnel hole (there are at least 3-5 in each bush). I thought they might be funnel web spiders or garden spider but the colorings don't match exactly. This one is a peachy tan color and it is about 2 inches long from the end to end with the legs streched- it's sitting on a leaf of pachysandra ground covering. I have attached a picture as I am really curious to know who my uninvited neighbors are and if they pose any threat. Please let me know if you have any ideas on what kind of spider this is. Thank you so much, Sarah

Hi Glen How are you doing? Havent sent you any emails in a while. Hope everything is going great for you. Well it is that time of year here in Michigan again and the spiders are starting to come out of the woodwork. Someone recently said they have a lot of spiders that looks like the Brown Recluse in their house and wanted to know what other spiders in Michigan might be confused with the recluse. Since they are extremely rare in Michigan and then they are usually transported in through luggage or something. I read the message at around 6:30 today and wasnt sure what to say. Then wouldn't you know it, tonight at 10:30, I had to save a spider from the cat. Unfortunately it already lost two legs. At first look, after catching it, I thought, "wow that looks a lot like a brown recluse, but without the violin marking. I held it up next to the pictures I have and I was amazed at how much the size and body shape and legs as well as coloring was similar. I took some good pics of it and was kind of relieved to see the eye pattern did not match. Eight eyes in two rows of four. Looking at your site, I only found one spider I thought was close. I think it may be the Giant House Spider, but the pics in your site all have a marble kind of pattern on the abdomens and this one is plain. Could you please take a look at it and tell me what kind you think it is? I will be using these pics in my blog, but if you want, you are free to use them as well. :o) Ken

Hi, I live in East Tennessee and I have found two spiders that I am unsure of what kind they are. I'm hoping you can help. One was crawling on me during the night, I literally jumped up to the ceiling!! (first 3 pics) It was pretty big, a little bigger than a silver dollar. Then the second one made a web on my front porch. It was the size of the first one, maybe a little bigger because I never seen it with it's legs fully extended. I am attaching some pictures.. The second I find very fascinating. I love the way it looks!

Hi. I'm from central New Jersey. I saw this huge spider on our recycling bin outside. The attached pictures were taken at night. In the morning I found the spider hanging by a single thread hugging a roundish white sack of eggs. Fearful this thing maybe a Hobo or Brown Recluse spider I had to destroy the eggs and spider with it. Another smaller spider similar to this one, I assume the male, was spotted but escaped. These things were much bigger then I'm use to seeing, I would guess the body was maybe 3 inches and the legs spread as wide as my hand. My kryptonite is spiders and ever since seeing these I've been very nervous for myself and my kids. Please let me know if these species are dangerous and what I can do? Thank you!

I was wondering if you knew what this spider was. Its body was around 1" long, and legs were 2-3". It was fast. My husband found it in his hard hat! We live in Evansville, IN, USA. Thanks!

Hi there. Great site! I found this guy in the garage this morning. Snapped a couple of pictures while he was on the cold floor being quite sluggish. I 99% positive it's a nursery spider. I wish the head-on pic came out better. The detail in the eye arrangement is a little fuzzy, but you can definitely tell the first row is curved back and the second row center ones a larger than the others. Keep up the informative site!
